Malocclusion means a bite that is bad, or not correct. In a normal (good) bite, the top teeth will slightly overlap the bottom teeth and the top teeth will fit into the grooves of the bottom teeth. When there is a bite problem, a dentist can help you get a better one.
Three Types
The first class that identifies the type of bite a person has is Class I. This is considered a normal bite, called occlusion. The teeth fit together properly. A Class II malocclusion is when the top teeth considerably overlap the bottom ones. Class III is the opposite, when the lower jaw and teeth overlaps the upper one.
Problems Caused by an Improper Bite
The amount of problems caused by an improper bite will vary. In some people, it will be much more pronounced and obvious. It may make it harder to chew or bite food. It can also make the face appear unusual. The individual may also tend to breathe through the mouth, and it sometimes can cause speech problems.
The Causes
The things that can cause an improper bite are many, oftentimes including genetics. Other things that may contribute to it include:
- Thumb sucking
- The use of a pacifier beyond age 3
- Extra or lost teeth
- Misalignment of the jaw after an injury
The Exam
Most likely, it will be a dentist that will notice the problem and will want to do some further testing. This may include taking a closer look at your bite to see how your teeth come together. This may result in being referred to an orthodontist. Once there, you will likely be given an x-ray or two, and a mold of your teeth and bite will probably be taken.
Treating the Problem
In most cases, the treatment will require wearing braces. This is the primary reason why people go to see an orthodontist. These days, patients (young and not so young) have a choice between several types of braces, and Invisalign, which consists of an invisible method of using aligners, to correct this problem.
In some cases, a tooth or two may need to be removed before applying the braces. While children most often get braces, people of any age may benefit from correcting misaligned teeth. It can make teeth easier to keep clean, too, which may mean that teeth last longer.
A good starting place to get a bad bite corrected is to see a dentist that can also do orthodontist work. Dentist offices that offer a wide variety of services can get it done faster and communication between dentists will certainly be better and faster.
